This project outlines the idea of utilizing Affective Education teachers as a 1:1 support for students. Affective Education teachers would transition from whole group instruction to 1:1/small group instruction of SEL and replacement skills curriculum. Schedule would be created to determine appropriate times to pull students for instruction. Lessons selected would be specialized based on the students' current Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals and behavior needs. Curriculum utilized would allow for meaningful role playing, scenarios, discussion, and reflection. Lessons would be pulled based on recent behavior interventions and IEP goals. This project intends to impact students by increasing the effectiveness of social emotional teaching in Affective Education, provide a more individualized approach for students that is data driven and aide in creating data supported IEP goals for all students. Through individualized instruction, teachers would be able to focus on skill development in deficit areas. A large instructional focus would include teaching students replacement behavior skills to navigate challenging situations in the school and community setting. Building these replacement skills would directly address students' IEP goals and behavior intervention plans (BIP). Implementation of this project provides opportunity to further utilize restorative practices to address challenging behaviors in the school setting. Utilizing restorative circles to address violations of classroom norms creates an opportunity for students to collaborate in determining solutions to conflicts, thus building relationships and community amongst students. This project would allow for scaffolding for students demonstrating appropriate skills for transition to their neighborhood school.
