“The SHOES Program (Scholars Helping Out Early Scholars) is an after-school cross-age peer mentoring program. The program will train middle school students on how to be an effective peer mentor to a younger student at Vega, with the long term goal of students assuming the roles of trainers for subsequent mentor cohorts. After training, mentoring pairs will build a solid connection in weekly sessions, strengthened through opportunities to explore the city and community. We anticipate mentor and mentee participants will see similar positive outcomes in attitudes toward school, self-management and academic improvement.”
