“Two years ago I heard about an innovative program started by teachers and students at Oakland International High School in California. The program is called “Community Walks,” and this is the initiative we will bring to our NYC school. Community Walks are neighborhood walking tours led by students and they serve to educate both teachers and/or other students. The tours typically focus on a particular cultural group (Yemeni, Garifuna, Bengali, Dominican, etc.), and the folks on the trip visit sites that both celebrate the students’ cultural heritage as well as illuminate some of the challenges these immigrant communities must overcome.”
