SEL Awardee

Joel Harper

Window Rock School District
Fort Defiance, AZ
“Window Rock ISD will partner with Elevate Navajo to implement a holistic SEL approach that hires and trains Navajo tribal elders to serve as full-time, salaried teacher-mentors who will 1) teach daily accredited classes that incorporate SEL strategies in the high school using a nationally proven and evidence-based curriculum that will be adapted by students and tribal leaders for the Navajo culture, 2) equip and provide weekly opportunity for the high school students to mentor elementary students in what they, themselves, have been discovering, and 3) mentor the high school students after school, on weekends and throughout summer vacation, including one-on-one, small group and large group activities. Family engagement activities are offered as well. Two high school classes (1 for freshmen/sophomores and 1 for juniors/senior) will be taught, engaging approximately 50 high school students. These high school students will mentor approximately 100 elementary students in small groups each week. The long term goal of the program is to equip Navajo youth to thrive and contribute to their community as identified by each student.”
