SEL Awardee

Kerri Frederick

Lincoln Elementary
Oakland Unified School District
Oakland, CA
“Lincoln Elementary will establish book circles (online book clubs) for parents, teachers and students. Social emotional learning and cultural responsiveness will be at the center of each circle. Self-selected reading is empowering, and collaboration and sharing through book study circles is bonding. Because we want social and emotional learning central in all that we do, we want to give SEL an exalted status by deeming it a formal topic of study for nearly everyone at Lincoln Elementary. We’ll use funds to purchase multiple copies of the books selected by each self-led book club/book study circle. We're excited about the inspiration a good book can prompt. In this model, we'll not be the consumers of a canned program, but, rather, engaged and connected learners, choosing our own topics for study and sustaining each other throughout our learning.”
