Voices College-Bound Language Academies
San Jose, CA
“Voices is seeking funds for an ongoing project to revise and further develop our existing Spanish Language Arts curriculum for our majority Latinx and English Learner (EL) student population in grades 6-8. Our academic program is unique from other programs as it is part of a rigorous dual-immersion, Spanish and English program. This new project in particular focuses on literacy in the Spanish language. This project will have an impact by improving our students' reading comprehension and ELA (English Language Arts) scores by viewing standards and teaching skills in students' native language. Additionally, it will help students develop an appreciation for Latinx or Spanish language literature and authors. While learning from this revised curriculum, students will be able to both see themselves in the texts, as they hear the voices of a Latinx writer or character, and also learn about other forms of the Spanish-speaking experience. Whether that is through the story of an immigrant crossing the border, or an indigenous man in pre-revolution Mexico, we will ensure that students have access to literature that gives them different perspectives about Latinx history and culture.”
