“We know representation matters. Allowing our scholars to deeply learn about and imagine themselves as the giants who have gone before them. Over the past several years, our Art Director has done photo series for Black History Month featuring our scholars as important Black change agents. From Michelle Obama to Spike Lee to the Nasa Scientists featured in Hidden Figures, our students have had the opportunity to learn about and imagine themselves as changemakers. In fact, our scholars were able to meet their heroes Michelle Obama and Katherine Johnson as a result of this work. Recognizing that it not only has been a source of pride for our schools, and most importantly for our scholars, we would like to expand this work to include more video production and scholar-driven projects and productions, and extend the work throughout the school year and beyond the school day.”
