“Though the Metro Schools have seen a sharp reduction in single year re-enrollment at individual sites (Juvenile: from 40% to 14%, Adult: from 43% to 6%), there has been an increase in the number of students straddling the juvenile and adult justice systems, referred to as "cross-systems" (42%), or moving into the adult system below the age of adult adjudication (19%). Building upon the innovative explicit SEL curriculum developed with the support of the 2019-2021 SEL in Action Grant, the staff and collaborating partners at Metro High will expand content to include application of SEL skills in ELA and Arts curricula, to include creative writing, poetry, music, and the visual arts. This work will deepen SEL skill development within participants, and provide tangible means for young people to use their lived experiences and skills to impact on the larger community, disrupting the systems contributing to the school to prison pipeline.”
