“Research shows that outdoor physical education opportunities support emotional, behavioral, and intellectual development. To foster social-emotional skills in the Physical Education classroom, students at Ruidoso Middle School will participate in “Wilderness Camp Adventures.” Physical Education classes will include strategies, instructional practices, and supports based on CASEL’s Five Core SEL Competencies of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making into Physical Education classes. “Wilderness Camp Adventures” will: be student-led, done with (not to) students; be focused on student outcomes; build community and culture; increase connections between students; foster deeper connections to nature; and be school and community-based through mentorship opportunities.”
