The SEL Blog
The Writing as Revolution Project will be a systemic writing program for young women of color to explore, discuss, analyze and write about contemporary issues that affect their own world. As educators, we know that writing is not just important as a tested area, but as the way to make your voice heard, your meaning shared and your history written. Not being able to adequately articulate thought in writing contributes to the hierarchical gap in learning that girls of color experience. But the “Writing as Revolution Project” provides young women with the tools necessary to overcome what has been stacked against them. Through writing, they will be able to access a future that has henceforth been denied to them and allow them to change the influences of racism, poverty, violence and sexism in their world. This is the time in our history when our most underserved and overpoliced youth can claim their power using communication taught with compassion and collaboration.
