The SEL Blog
Magical Experiences Arts Company (MEAC) is an organization that provides innovative and creative theater programming to both day and residential schools and adult care centers. MEAC provides interactive performances which: empower, inspire and educate children, adolescents and adults with severe multiple disabilities in a safe, nurturing environment. The goal of which is to develop communication and self-expression skills. The performances provide individuals with disabilities an opportunity to fully participate and become engaged in theater at a high standard of excellence.
MEAC is completely unique in its approach to delivering theater to our kids, and the results have been extraordinary. Instead of giving our kids a modified performance or somehow adapting her program to our students, MEAC founder Joanne Margulius creates her performances specifically for our students. The kids respond to Joanne's performances in ways we've never before seen with enrichment activities. They know she is speaking directly and specifically to them and because of that, they engage with her and her material and respond.
Joanne encourages teachers and staff to learn these techniques to integrate them into other parts of the curriculum. Our students have difficulty accessing history through traditional curricular avenues, and history deals with issues these kids are experiencing directly. Joanne's performances are a resource the teachers value greatly.
