Practice Makes Perfect
The SEL Blog
The 2020-2021 school year will be like none before it, with students in my district in a hybrid model of some at-school learning and some distance learning. The SEL strategies that we have developed as a community need to change to meet the needs of our kids, to support families who have suddenly become de-facto teachers, and to address the great racial and socio-economic disparities that have been widened by COVID-19 both across our country and very specifically in my school community, which has been very impacted by COVID-19. To respond to this great crisis, we need SEL supports to help students to not merely overcome trauma but thrive. We need SEL embedded in families. We need SEL that students own. We need SEL built around anti-racist and culturally-responsive practices. Our project is built around finding ways to strengthen the connections between teachers and families and provide resources and tools to families to allow them to be SEL leaders and teachers in partnership with our teachers and school SEL team.
