Early adolescence can feel chaotic, but “music makes order out of chaos.” (Y. Menuhin). Through a layered approach, this project will implement a Therapeutic African Drumming program across four select schools (with feeder patterns). Participants will acquire skills in teamwork, leadership, stress-management, emotional regulation and music. This project aims to have a positive impact on overall school climate and decrease disciplinary events, decrease disproportionality for Black/African American students in disciplinary events, increase attendance rates, increase a sense of belonging and positive self-identity, increase positive relationships among peers and adults, and provide a smooth transition from elementary to middle school for at-risk students.
